TPF Projects - Case Study #1

TPF Mail Server Project

Overview

The Mail Server project involved the porting and modification of industry standard electronic mail solutions from the UNIX operating system to TPF. These solutions were then further modified to take advantage of TPF operating system strengths to maximise throughput and minimise infrastructure requirements. The industry resulting products provided solutions for the SMTP, IMAP and POP email protocols.

TPF Services

IBM selected In1 Solutions as their partner for the TPF Mail Server project as In1 Solutions was best positioned to provide the expert team of TPF system and application specialists. In1 Solutions had the broad range of application, communication and system programming expertise capable of performing the port of the protocol solutions from UNIX. Experience was required in identifying the deficiencies of the protocols in TPF, developing interfaces where UNIX and TPF differed significantly in terms of operating system structure and delivering solutions to take advantage of TPF strengths.

Scope

The IBM Mail Server project involved the porting of industry standard email products from the UNIX operating system to the TPF operating system platform. These solutions were then heavily modified to take advantage of TPF capabilities to improve throughput, reduce I/O and increase processing speed.

Scale

The Mail Server project consisted of a team of 9 people, of which 6 are experienced members of the In1 Solutions development team. The Mail Server project was of 27 months duration. The Mail Server project ported 70 (1000 Lines of Code) KLOC and wrote 35 KLOC of new code.

Contribution

In1 ported the IMAP, POP and SMTP protocol solutions to the TPF operating system. In1 Solutions provided the TPF applications programming expertise to modify the solutions to take advantage of TPF strengths.

Deliverables

In1 Solutions in close partnership with IBM successfully delivered the electronic mail product for TPF. The project was a significant testament to the level of co-operation enjoyed between the two development teams. The IBM team was located in the US and In1 worked via remote data links to the IBM development centre using TPF VisualAge.

The expertise gained in the development of the TPF Mail Server places In1 at the leading edge of the integration of mail and UNIX based solutions in the TPF environment.
