TPF Projects - Case Study #2

Cargo - TPF 4.1 Migration

Overview

In January 1999, Sabre began the process of migrating FOS (Flight Operations System) from the TPF3.1 uni-processor platform to the TPF4.1 Tightly/Loosely coupled platform. FOS is one of several real-time systems in the SABRE complex. FOS houses the most critical applications for the operation of Sabre's fleet as late flights cost money and disappoint customers. FOS includes Flight Operations & Dispatch, Crew Operations, Cargo Operations and Maintenance & Engineering.

In October 1997 limitation in the system showed a need to better understand activity in the FOS environment. Analysis of the then environment revealed that FOS would not be able to support the predicted growth of airline business beyond 2nd Quarter, 2001. This growth challenge necessitated the migration to the TPF4.1 Tightly/Loosely coupled platform.

In1 Solutions had previously worked with Sabre on various successful projects (including Cargo System projects) and thus In1 was requested to work on the Cargo part of this project.

Scale/Scope

The Sabre Cargo TPF system consisted of 3,800 Sabretalk / Assembler programs. In1 was required to analyse and modify all segments for implications relating to Tightly / Loosely coupled compatibility.

In1 Contribution

In1 performed the Analysis, Project Management, Design, Construction and Testing. There was an In1 Project Manager based on the Customer site and the Dublin-based team ranged in size from five to thirteen highly experienced developers over the duration of the project.

Deliverables

The first deliverables produced by In1 were Analysis documents for each functional subsystem within the Cargo application. These Analysis documents identified the necessary changes in all the affected programs. In1 then performed the Design, Segment Modification and Unit Testing. In1 also provided support during System Integration and Customer Acceptance Testing. Finally, coverage was provided for the three cutovers: to TPF4.1, to Tightly Coupled and to Loosely Coupled.

In1 delivered the project on time, on budget and to the highest quality levels as would be expected with such a mission critical airline application.
