Creating/editing a page

Creating/Editing a page

To create a page in WordPress, click on the ‘Add New’ button under ‘Pages’ in the navigation menu on the left-hand side. Enter the title of the page and enter the content you need. The text editor works much the same way as Microsoft Word or Open Office. If the page you want to edit already exists, click on ‘Pages’ on the navigation menu and select the page you wish to edit. You can also search for a page using the search field on the top-right of the page.

Note: if you are copying text from another source (Microsoft Word, another webpage etc.), copy the text into a Notepad document first and then copy from Notepad into WordPress. This is to ensure that the styling of the text remains uniform with the rest of the website.

For all options available in the text editor click the ‘Show/Hide Kitchen Sink’ button on the toolbar. Also, ensure the ‘Visual’ tab is selected while editing text. This tab can be found on the right-hand side of the toolbar.

To enter header text for a page highlight the text and select ‘Heading 1’ in the toolbar. This will format the text to the header text style.

Linking Text

If you need to create a link within the text, highlight the text you wish to add the link to and select the ‘Insert/edit link’ button.

Enter the URL of the page you want the highlighted text to link to and select whether or not you want this link to open in a new window/tab. It is recommended that if the link goes to a page on another website, it should open in a new/tab so the user is not directed away from your website.

If you want to link text to a pdf document, just enter the URL for the item which can be found in the media library. To access this, click ‘Library’ under the ‘Media’ navigation category on the left and find the document you want to link. Click on the document and copy the File URL. This is the URL you will enter in the ‘Insert link’ option in the text editor.

Creating/Editing a post

Creating/Editing a post

Posts can be created or edited in ‘Posts’ at the top of the WordPress navigation menu. Click ‘All Posts’ to edit existing posts, or ‘Add New’ to create a new one.

Text is edited in the text editor…see the Creating/editing a page guide for more info. You can also redirect a post to another page or a file, such as a pdf, in exactly the same way as you would with a page.

Some posts may only display a few lines of text…check this on your site before adding content as, if too much text is entered, it may not display on your website.

Most posts will be assigned a category. This category determines where the post is to be displayed. Categories can be viewed, selected and edited in the categories field to the right of the text editor.

Posts can be used for a variety of functionalities, so check for information as to how posts work for your site specifically.

Custom Fields – Slideshows

Custom Fields – Slideshows

Below the page text editor you will notice a ‘Custom Fields’ area. If this is not automatically displayed click on the ‘Screen Options’ button at the top-right of the page and check the ‘Custom Fields’ box.

The first Custom Field which should be added is ‘gallery’. This is what displays the main slideshow images on each page. After clicking ‘Add New Custom Field’ select gallery from the drop-down menu. If this does not appear in the menu you can just type the word ‘gallery’. Enter the gallery number in the box to the right. If you wish to change the slideshow displayed on a page just replace the slideshow number in this field with the number of the gallery you wish to display. Galleries can be viewed in the ‘Manage Gallery’ filed under ‘Gallery’ in the navigation bar on the left.

If your site uses uBillboard to display slideshows on its pages, the custom field you will need to use is ‘billboard_name’.

The value for this custom field is the name of the billboard you wish to use.

All billboards can be viewed in the ‘uBillboard’ section of the navigation menu.

Featured Image

Adding or editing a Featured Image

A Featured Image is normally used to display a main image on a post or a secondary image on a page (separate to the larger, main image). You can add or edit the featured image of a page or post from the ‘Featured Image’ section of the text editor.

To add a new Featured Image, click ‘Set featured image’ and select the file from your PC which you want to use.

When you upload or select the image you want to use, be sure to click ‘Use as featured image’ and not ‘Insert into Post’ button.

Clicking ‘Remove featured image’ will remove the current image and give you the option of setting a new one. You can add a new image from your PC or the media library of images already loaded to the site.

When uploading a new image be sure to check whether or not there are restrictions on the size of image which can be used…there usually are! Images which are not the correct size may seem stretched; large images may take time to display and will affect the loading time of your site.

Main Slideshow – Gallery

Manage/edit galleries

You can manage galleries in WordPress by selecting ‘Manage Gallery’ in the ‘Gallery’ section of the Navigation bar on the left. Just select the gallery you wish to edit by clicking on it. Each gallery is named and numbered, and the number corresponds to the ‘gallery’ custom field on each page. This is what pulls in the slideshow on each page. In Manage Gallery images can be deleted from slideshows or re-ordered. To re-order the images just click ‘Sort Gallery’ and click and drag the images into the desired order. Don’t forget to click the ‘Update Sort Order’ button before you leave the page.

To add new images to a gallery, click ‘Add Gallery/Images’ on the left and select which Gallery you want to add the image to from the dropdown. Then click the Browse button which will allow you to select a file from your computer to upload to the gallery.

If an image is being uploaded to more than one gallery you will need to repeat this step for each gallery…more than one gallery cannot be selected at this stage. Images being uploaded to a gallery will need to be a certain size. The size of an image varies from site to site so be sure to check your site’s specifications before uploading new images.

To create a new gallery click the ‘Add New Gallery’ tab in ‘Add Gallery/Images’, enter the name of your new gallery then continue from above step.

Main Slideshow – uBillboard

Managing/editing uBillboard

You can manage your slideshows in uBillboard by selecting uBillboard>uBillboard on the navigation menu on the left. Then select the billboard you wish to edit by clicking on it. Each billboard is named, and the name corresponds to the ‘billboard_name’ custom field on each page. This is what pulls in the slideshow on each page. If no ‘billboard_name’ value is entered on a page, the default billboard will be displayed, which is usually the first billboard on the list.

When you click on the billboard name you can add and delete images and change the order in which they appear on your site. Each image appears as a slide. To re-order the slides, use the Slide Order field on the right-hand side of the page and simply click and drag the slides into the desired order.

To add an image you will need to first upload the image into the Media Library. Make sure the image is the correct size before uploading it…you will have been advised of the correct size already by one of our WordPress engineers. Then, at the bottom of the page, click the Add New Slide button, which will add a new slide into the final position. Finally, paste the file URL into the ‘Image URL’ field of the slide.

You can delete a slide by clicking the delete icon which appears in the top-right hand corner of the individual slide when you move your cursor to that position.

To create a new billboard, select uBillboard>Add Billboard from the navigation menu on the left. Please note, however, that this is creating a new Billboard from scratch and the new billboard will not have retained the correct settings for your site. If you are unsure about creating a new billboard, get in touch with your In1 Solutions contact who will take you through the process or create the billboard for you.

When naming your new billboard do not use any spaces (you can use dashes instead) and keep the names all in lower case. The settings for your new billboard are all found on the right-hand side. There are no universal settings for a billboard as your site will have been custom-designed. For reference you can check an existing billboard and copy the setting exactly, paying particular attention to the billboard size (Width and Height in pixels) and the Controls section.

Menu navigation

Adding pages to a menu

Any page can be added to a menu by clicking ‘Menus’ in the ‘Appearance’ section in the navigation bar on the left. Select which menu you wish to edit by selecting the relevant tab.

Menu order can be edited by simply clicking and dragging menu items. If the menu item is indented to the right slightly, it will appear as a sub-page of the menu item.

Uploading Media

Uploading Media

You can upload images, pdfs etc. for use throughout the site, for example images on pages or links to images/pdfs within text. To upload images got to Media>Add New on the left-hand navigation menu. You can either select files from your PC or drag-and-drop the files to upload to the media library.

Widgets

Widgets

Widgets may be used for a variety of features on a website. These include a rotating image carousel on a home page or static, linked images throughout your site.
To edit a widget, got to Appearance > Widgets in WordPress navigation menu.

Active widgets are arranged into categories, which are displayed on the right-hand side of the Widgets section in the WordPress backend.

To add a new widget, drag the widget from the ‘Available Widgets’ section to the relevant category. The most common type of widget is an image widget and is what your site will most likely use.

You can change the image to appear in the widget, the text to be displayed in the widget and to where the widget will link. In the link field you can enter another page on the site to link to or, if the button is to link to an offer, the specific offer link in the booking engine. Carousel widgets may also be linked to a pdf…just add the pdf to the Media Library and link the widget to the File URL.
Note: Images in image widgets will need to be a specific size as large images may take time to load or may look stretched when re-scaled automatically. Make sure to check the correct size of image required for your site.

Existing widgets can be edited by clicking on them and editing their content. Just remember to click the Save button when you are finished.

If you want to remove a widget but save its settings for future use, instead of deleting it you can drag it to the ‘Inactive Widgets’ field. This will remove the widget from your live site but will keep it saved for use in the future, thus saving you from having to build it from the start all over again.
