Safe Travels: The Future of the Industry in the ‘New Normal’

May 27, 2020 | Latest News

From India to the United States, individuals the world over are attempting to visualise the future of their indigenous travel industries. Tourism was at an all-time high prior to the outbreak of COVID-19, with cheap flights and increased leisure time stirring up cross-generational feelings of wanderlust.

We are looking forward to a time when the prospect of adventure and world travel is as thrilling and accessible as it once was. And while that time will come, we will notice some important differences across the airline and hotel industries.

According to Tiffany Misrahi, Vice President of Policy at the World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC) in the UK,  “The travel sector will have to reinvent itself in what will be a ‘new normal’, requiring a meaningful transformation […] We expect to see significant transformations around health security and hygiene, sustainability, digitisation, the future of work and in terms of consumer demands and expectations.”

Both airlines and hotels are being urged to implement touchless solutions, where possible. Aside from increased sanitation methods, it is advised that health screening measures are put in place for employees. Those showing symptoms of COVID-19 will be isolated and health resources will be provided to customers.

There is discussion of “Immunity Passports” being introduced for those with antibodies. And of course, best practice should be followed in food and beverage preparation and service to ensure the health and safety of both employees and customers.

Finally, with regards to booking hotel stays well in advance, there is lingering uncertainty about the state of the world six months from now. As a result, properties need to have cancellation or alternative date policies in place. Gift vouchers are being cited as an ingenious solution to combat these shaky grounds.
